Auto-Tracking
How does auto-drive detection work?
Lifeline uses low-power GPS monitoring to detect when you start driving. Once sustained movement above 25 mph is detected for about 60 seconds, a trip begins automatically. No action needed on your part.
What are BLE devices and how do they help?
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons are small devices you can place in your vehicle. When your phone detects the beacon, Lifeline knows you're in your car and can start tracking faster and more reliably — even indoors or in parking garages where GPS is weak.
Does tracking drain my battery?
Lifeline uses low-power GPS (significant location changes) while idle, which has minimal battery impact. Full GPS only activates during an active trip. Most users see less than 5% daily battery usage from Lifeline.
Why did a trip start when I wasn't driving?
GPS signals can bounce in buildings or dense areas. Lifeline filters out low-accuracy readings (>50m), but occasionally a false start can occur. You can delete any incorrect trips from the trip history.
Gig Mode
What does Gig Mode do?
Gig Mode automatically labels short trips as deliveries and associates them with your active gig platform (DoorDash, Uber Eats, Instacart, etc.). This saves time categorizing trips at tax time.
Which platforms are supported?
DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, Instacart, Amazon Flex, Spark, Shipt, and Lyft. You can also add custom platform names.
Do I need Gig Mode on all the time?
No — only enable it when you're actively doing deliveries. When off, trips are tracked normally without delivery labels.
Mileage & Odometer
Why does Lifeline ask for odometer readings?
The IRS accepts two methods for mileage deductions: actual expenses or standard mileage rate. Both require accurate records. Odometer readings at trip start/end provide IRS-compliant documentation that GPS alone cannot.
What if I forget to enter my odometer?
Lifeline will estimate mileage from GPS data. You can always edit the trip later to add or correct odometer readings. For best tax documentation, try to enter readings regularly.
How does Smart Destinations work?
Lifeline learns your frequently visited locations. After a few trips to the same place, it will auto-suggest the destination name when you start a trip headed that direction.
Receipt Scanning
How does AI receipt scanning work?
Take a photo of any receipt and Lifeline's AI (powered by Google Gemini) extracts the vendor, amount, date, and category automatically. It works with printed and handwritten receipts.
What expense categories are available?
Meals, gas/fuel, supplies, maintenance, insurance, phone/internet, software, parking/tolls, travel, lodging, and more. The AI suggests a category, but you can always change it.
Are my receipt images stored?
Receipt images are processed in real-time and the extracted data is saved to your account. Images are not permanently stored on our servers after processing.
Tax & IRS Guidance
What is the 2026 IRS standard mileage rate?
The 2026 IRS standard mileage rate for business use is 72.5 cents per mile. This rate covers gas, insurance, depreciation, and maintenance — you cannot deduct those separately if using the standard rate.
Do I qualify for mileage deductions?
If you're a 1099 independent contractor (freelancer, gig worker, self-employed), you can deduct business miles. W-2 employees generally cannot deduct mileage since the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
Business vs. personal miles — what counts?
Business miles include driving to client sites, between job locations, or for deliveries. Your regular commute from home to a primary office is personal. However, if you work from home, trips to client locations are business miles.
What records does the IRS require?
The IRS requires: date of trip, destination, business purpose, and miles driven. Lifeline captures all of these automatically. Keep records for at least 3 years after filing.
Is Lifeline a substitute for a tax professional?
No. Lifeline helps you track and organize your deductions, but it does not provide tax advice. Always consult a qualified tax professional or CPA for filing decisions.
